For cap-that.com & farscapecaps.com it's just me and artphilia - but she's probably busier than I am! We tend to do different shows so that we're not capping the same episodes twice - it's happened before. I used to help the lady that owned farscape-caps.com, so I was just as devistated as you when it went down! As great as the caps were, I'd just feel so BAD re-uploading them without her permission, so.. the mad Farscape capping spree began. It's fun. I get a bit sick of it every now and then, but it's like a promise I've got to keep to myself or something.
I always try and do a few episodes of something every month.. I just feel so guilty if I don't!
Programs - I currently use WinDVD. I use an older one, actually (Version 4) as I really don't like the way the newer ones work. Picky, huh? I tried using PowerDVD and VLC, but the quality was the same for extra work. I was able to make larger caps on PowerDVD, but the quality wasn't always the best.
Hosting - I currently use SurpassHosting.com. I have a reseller for myself (and my bazillion sites), but their shared hosting is REALLY cheap. I've been with them for a few years, and after a few initial teething problems ... I get along great with them. I'd highly recommend them if space & bandwidth is an issue!
Layouts - funny you shoudl say you like mine. I'm one of those people that likes it for a month.. and then can't believe I ever let it out in public! cap-that.com is shamefully overdue, however. Speaking of.. I hope you don't mind if I link your site? I've been meaning to update the links for a while.
Also - I hope you don't mind if I friend you. No obligation to friend me back ;)
Did the owner of farscape-caps tell you she wasn't renewing the hosting, or did she just shut down and that was that? I know what you mean about getting sick of capping, I'll go on HUGE capping tangents and cap like crazy, and then I'll die and not want anything to do with it for the rest of the month, lol. Exactly, I feel bad if I go a month without at least capping something.
Ohh, see I'm a Mac user, and as far as capping goes, resources are very very limited, haha. So I have a program from xilosoft - it autocaps (I prefer manual, but it's hard to find a quality capping program for mac that makes quality caps. I basically run the autocap and end up with something like 6,000 caps and then just weed out the bad ones. Takes forever, but it's my biggest pet peeve when people put an avi file on autocap, end up with 9,000 caps that are crappy quality, and then ask people to credit them. Seriously.. anyone can do that. *sigh*
I'll have to look into that if we ever need another host. I never have space or bandwidth issues, it's the CPU limits that kill us. My dream is to one day *magically* have enough time to figure out how to run a server from my home and just do self hosting. I love big projects like that Haha! I'm one of those people who likes my layouts for about a day, and then think "WOW! What was I thinking?!" lol - I've gotten as far as getting the entire layout coded, and then trashing it bc i hate it. (Which is one of the reasons why we still don't have a layout.. haha)
I was going to suggest affiliating! Once IAD has an affiliation page, we will totally link back to you! :D Our two year birthday is coming up the first of the year, so I'm hoping that we will have everything up by then! :D

I totally know what you mean! I've tried doing the autocap & weeding method before.. but it wasn't me. Not at the moment, anyway. Right now I literally go through the episode frame-by-frame and take a snap when I think I've found a nice one. Usually about 10 caps per minute? But it takes about 2 hours or so to do - unless my computer plays up (like it has now while I'm capping Battlestar *growls*)
CPU usage issues - is that to do with the script your using? Coppermine IS a bit of a resource hog (from what I'm aware), which is a reason I don't use it.

Oh, no. saava has just been a little sparse in her internet activities the last year or two. It was a great project, and I'd sent her emails asking if she needed help, hosting, payments for the domain name.. anything, really. But she never responded. I guess her RL is just too busy, which is totally fine. I just wish there was a way to save it before it disappeared *sigh*
And congratulations on 2 years! I think I'll be doing a re-design for our two-years, as well. Hehe, good thing I have 7 months to go ;) Oh, and I'd be totally proud to affiliate with your site!

I did that with Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog caps, because I could only cap it throug itunes, so I had to use Mac's version of Print Screen (which is actually a lot better, it saves the screencap instead of just copying it to clipboard) and it took me HOURS. lol

Actually - We haven't run into very many with Coppermine only because we tend to make all the thumbs first.. but It was our old gallery script Gallery2 that was hogging the world, lol. I wish I could use just a simple gallery script, but I have to admit, I'm in love with being able to see how many views a cap gets etc etc.
I totally understand RL getting in the way, I've abandoned a ton of fan sites/listings/etc that I had when I was in highschool and put SO MUCH time into - and then life started and I got a real job full time and they all just died. BUt I agree, it's sad to see all that hard work just vanish.
